American Carved Mahogany Full Tester Bed, 19th c., probably New Orleans, with a shell carved serpentine headboard supported by cluster column posts, H.- 114 in., Int. W.- 59 1/2 in., Int. D.- 72 in.

  • Condition: This is a handsome example in need of professional restoration. There are modern repairs done with wood blocks and screws present throughout the interior of the canopy, presumably to be re-covered with upholstery. The bed frame is missing multiple bolts that would make the mattress area secure, and it is lacking horizontal slats. The tester canopy lacks three out of four dowels/blocks that are necessary to make the canopy secure to the posts. The headboard cosmetically has nothing to report, and looks nice. The side rails have small pieces of veneer missing throughout. The foot rail has small pieces of veneer missing from the top edge. The feet of the posts have multiple areas where the veneer is lacking in 1" pieces or larger. Two pieces of the molding that goes around the feet are now lacking. There are old attempts to stain or paint where the veneer is missing in some of these areas. On the posts themselves, there are multiple places where about two inches of veneer is now missing, and the top of one post has wrinkled veneer throughout the curves. On the canopy, there is some separation where the boards join together at the corners. There are flakes and wrinkling to the veneer in multiple places. The pegs and blocks that connect the canopy and posts, along with some large bolts for the bed frame, must be restored for this to be sturdy enough for normal use. The front of the canopy has no cosmetic issues to report except for one minor chip to veneer.
