Louisiana School, "Portrait of a Creole Gentleman," 19th c., oil on canvas, unsigned, presented in an ebonized and gilt accented frame, H.- 28 3/4 in., W.- 23 in., Framed H.- 35 1/2 in., W.- 30 in. Provenance: from the Estate of Dr. Peter Elwood Dorsett, New Orleans, Louisiana.

  • Condition: Condition is consistent with age. There is surface mold visible on canvas, particularly on bottom, and middle left side. The paint has craquelure throughout, but it is primarily visible in the background/sky area of canvas. The stretcher outline can also be seen from years of canvas resting on top of stretcher. On the top left side, in the red curtain, there is a bubble to canvas from something hitting or leaning on back of canvas. Just below to the right of this, there is another indent to canvas, possibly from something leaning against it previously. Neither of them has punctured the canvas. On the right side of the sitter's head there is a tiny circular loss of paint as well as craquelure. Looking at the back of the canvas, there does seem to be some sign of mold, but a good restorer should be able to address the mold on either side of the canvas. Having been in a Louisiana collection, it is common to see artwork with mold due to the intense humidity and loss of power we often deal with due to hurricanes, etc. Under black light, there does not seem to be any in-painting visible, but there are some specks of dirt or foreign substance on parts of canvas. The frame has some paint loss throughout, particularly on the corners and bottom left and right sides. The corners also have some minor damage, possibly from a previous move. Please reference photos as well. This is a very handsome example of its time and just needs a professional cleaning.
